Iron supplementation in Anganwadi Centres in Bihar, India
with Ann-Charline Weber, Abhijeet Kumar, Sebastian Vollmer
published | RCT | primary data | India

In this project, we implemented a randomized controlled trial to test the introduction of cast iron ingots to prepare iron-enriched drinking water in pre-schools (Anganwadi Centres) in Bihar, India. While the COVID-19 pandemic stopped us from measuring children's anemia status at follow-up, we conducted a phone survey with Anganwadi Workers to evaluate the intervention. I co-led the study during my doctoral studies together with another doctoral student.

As a preparation for the trial, we measured the functionality of all Anganwadi Centres in 10 out of 13 blocks in Madhepura district using two unannounced visits, in November 2019 and February 2020. We repeated the measurement in November 2023. We also validated a smartphone-based app for anemia screening in the same setting.

Learning assessment to measure arithmetic skills in children in Sokoto, Nigeria
with Ann-Charline Weber and Sebastian Vollmer
published | descriptive | primary data | Nigeria

This project started with the impact evaluation of a school development programme in Sokoto, Nigeria. I joined the project as a doctoral student during the development of survey tools for the baseline data collection. While testing the learning assessment, we noticed that children performed poorly in standard mathematic tasks while they were capable to solve more complicated market transactions. This observation led us to investigate children's arithmetic skills more closely. Together with another doctoral student, I co-led the study. The data collected is publicly available, together with a data descriptor.

In this project, we implemented a randomized controlled trial to evaluate a participatory learning and action programme called Gram Varta in Bihar, India. We analysed a range of outcomes, including health, health behaviour, health knowledge, and empowerment. I joined the project as a research assistant during endline data collection and analysed the data first for my master's thesis. Analysis files for publications are available at GRO.data.
